Tellurian Pastiche Heathcote Shiraz 2010

The Vineyard

The 2010 Pastiche is a blend of Shiraz from our estate vineyard on Tranter Rd, Toolleen, on the western slopes of the Mount Camel range and the Tuohey family vineyard on the eastern side of Mount Camel. Both our Toolleen vineyard and the Tuohey vineyard are carefully managed by Winemaker Tobias Ansted and Viticulturist Tim Brown to ensure optimal vine balance using techniques such as shoot positioning, shoot thinning, fruit thinning, green harvesting and multiple picking passes in order to ensure exceptional fruit quality.

The Vintage

The 2010 season started well with moderate winter rain. Early Spring growth was good followed by a hot spell in mid-November and very good rainfalls late in the month. December and January were both relatively dry and hot with temperatures topping 40C in early January. The heat continued through February, with decent rainfalls keeping the vines ticking over. Cooler weather followed in early March, along with some decent rain events, with the fruit picked on 3rd & 7th March in good condition.

The Winemaking

The handpicked grapes were fermented in small open vats for ten days with hand plunging 2-3 times per day before being pressed to barrel. Maturation in French and American oak for 10 months, combining a small portion new oak and mostly seasoned oak has added depth and complexity. The winemaking philosophy is one that aims to allow the fruit to have full expression with winemaking and oak inputs playing a supporting role.

The Wine

This wine is a vibrant expression of Heathcote Shiraz relying on intense fruit combined with subtle oak. Bright red purple colour. The nose displays aromas of plum and dark berries with hints of cocoa and earthy notes. The palate is bright and fresh with berry fruit intensity, well balanced acidity, fine dusty tannins and great length. This Shiraz is made to be approachable in its youth, but will also gain in complexity and finesse over the next 3-5 years.

ANALYSIS: Alcohol – 13.7%, Titratable Acidity – 5.8 g/L, pH – 3.56
