Tellurian Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2012

THE VINEYARD

The fruit for the 2012 Heathcote Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre was selected from three separate vineyards in the central and northern zones of the Heathcote region. The Shiraz was hand picked from our own vineyard in Tranter Rd, Toolleen, on the western side of the Mt Camel range, where the rich Cambrian soils on the block are in excess of 1.6 metres deep. Fruit for the Grenache and Mourvedre was hand picked from selected from two vineyards on the eastern side of the Mt Camel Range.

Winemaker Tobias Ansted and Viticulturist Tim Brown work closely with these growers to ensure vineyard management and harvesting practices are consistent with our own vineyard where techniques such as shoot positioning, shoot thinning, fruit thinning, green harvesting and multiple picking passes are adopted to ensure exceptional fruit quality.

THE VINTAGE

The 2012 season started well with good winter rain. Early Spring growth was ideal followed by moderate temperatures and reasonable rainfall contributing to good canopy growth. Growing and ripening conditions from December through to February were close to perfect. Despite decent rain events in late February, the fruit was hand-picked in excellent condition.

The grapes for the 2012 Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre were hand harvested between 26th February and 20th March 2012, between 14.0 and 14.5 baume.

THE WINEMAKING

The hand picked Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvedre grapes were de-stemmed and gently crushed prior to fermentation in small open top fermenters, with each parcel kept separate until final blending.

The grapes were allowed to macerate on skins for two days prior to being inoculated with a selected yeast. The Shiraz and Mourvedre grapes were fermented on skins until dryness (approx. 9 days) and the Grenache was held on skins for a further 10 days post fermentation. All batches received hand plunging or pump overs twice per day before pressing to barrel. The wine was matured in seasoned French oak barriques for 10 months prior to bottling.

The final blend is made up of 56% Grenache, 25% Shiraz and 19% Mourvedre.

THE WINE

The wine is bright ruby red in colour, with lifted aromas of plum and wild strawberry with some more meaty charcuterie and sous-bois notes. The palate is soft and supple with lovely sweet fruit leading to a long balanced finish, with ultra fine tannins. A wine that is seductive in its youth, and expected to gain in complexity over the next 3-5 years.

ANALYSIS – Alcohol: 14.4%, Titratable Acidity: 4.75 g/L, pH: 3.88
