Tellurian Heathcote Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre 2013

The fruit for the 2013 Heathcote Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre was selected from two vineyards in the central and northern zones of the Heathcote region. The Shiraz and Grenache fruit was hand picked from our own vineyard in Tranter Rd, Toolleen, on the western side of the Mt Camel range, where the rich Cambrian soils on the block are in excess of 1.6 metres deep.

The Mourvèdre was hand picked from a single vineyard on the eastern side of the Mt Camel Range. Winemaker Tobias Ansted and Viticulturist Tim Brown work closely with this grower to ensure vineyard management and harvesting practices are consistent with our own vineyard where techniques such as shoot positioning, shoot thinning, fruit thinning, and green harvesting are adopted to ensure exceptional fruit quality.

The 2013 season started well with good winter and early spring rain, but from late September the season stayed dry through to harvest. The warm dry conditions accelerated ripening, with harvest kicking off almost two weeks ahead of normal.

The grapes for the 2013 Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre were hand harvested between February 21st and March 14th, between 13.2 and 14.5 baume.

The hand picked Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre grapes were de-stemmed and gently crushed prior to fermentation in small open top fermenters, with each parcel kept separate until final blending.

The grapes were allowed to macerate on skins for two days prior to being inoculated with a selected yeast. The Shiraz grapes were fermented on skins until dryness (14 days) and the Grenache and Mourvèdre were held on skins for a further 7 days post fermentation. All batches were hand plunged or pumped over twice per day before pressing to barrel. The wine was matured in seasoned French oak barriques for 10 months prior to bottling. The final blend is made up of 43% Grenache, 29% Shiraz and 28% Mourvèdre.

The wine is bright plum red in colour, with lifted aromas of plum and wild strawberry with some complex spicy notes. The palate is soft and supple with densely packed mid-palate fruit leading to a long balanced finish, with ultra fine tannins. A wine that is seductive in its youth, and expected to gain in complexity over the next 3-5 years.
