Tellurian Heathcote ‘Pastiche’ Shiraz 2009

The Vineyard & Vintage

The 2009 Pastiche is a blend of Shiraz from our estate vineyard located on the western slopes of the Mount Camel range and the Touhey family vineyard on the eastern side of Mount Camel. Both our estate vineyard and the Touhey vineyard are carefully managed by Viticulturist Tim Brown to ensure optimal vine balance using techniques such as shoot positioning and thinning, fruit thinning, green harvesting and multiple picking passes in order to ensure exceptional fruit quality. The 2009 vintage was challenging for many regions due to heat and drought conditions, with Heathcote less affected than most. The fruit was harvested by hand in early March 2009 to maintain freshness, with selective handpicking of only the best bunches to maintain optimal quality and avoid any sun damaged bunches.

The Winemaking

The winemaking philosophy is one that aims to allow the fruit to have full expression with winemaking and oak inputs playing a supporting role. The handpicked grapes were fermented in small open vats for ten days with hand plunging 2-3 times per day before being pressed to barrel. Maturation in French and American oak for 10 months, combining a small portion new oak and mostly seasoned oak has added depth and complexity.

The Wine

This wine is a great expression of Heathcote Shiraz relying on vibrant and intense fruit combined with subtle oak. Vibrant red purple colour, the nose reveals aromas of blueberry, black cherry and dark cocoa. The mid-weight palate has great intensity and balance, the pure fruit drives across the palate and is backed by fine dusty tannins. Approachable on release this wine will develop added complexity over the next 3 to 5 years. ANA LYSIS: Alcohol – 13.5%, Titratable Acidity – 6.3 g/L, pH – 3.46

This is a shiraz grown on both the Tellurian estate vineyard and a nearby Heathcote vineyard. It was matured mostly in French oak with a smidge of American – which, with Australian shiraz, is rarely a bad idea. It’s fresh and fruity and extremely easy to enjoy. It’s welcomely lower…
