Tellurian Heathcote Pastiche Shiraz 2013

THE VINEYARD

The 2013 Pastiche is a blend of Shiraz from our estate vineyard in Tranter Rd, Toolleen, on the western slopes of the Mount Camel range and the Touhey family vineyard on the eastern side of Mount Camel in Colbinabbin. Both vineyards have been planted on the deep, rich, Cambrian soil for which the region is renowned.

Both our Toolleen vineyard and the Touhey vineyard are carefully managed by Winemaker Tobias Ansted and Viticulturist Tim Brown to ensure optimal vine balance using techniques such as shoot positioning, shoot thinning, fruit thinning and green harvesting in order to ensure exceptional fruit quality.

THE VINTAGE

The 2013 season started well with good winter and early spring rain, but from late September the season stayed dry through to harvest. The warm dry conditions accelerated ripening, with harvest kicking off almost two weeks ahead of normal.

The Shiraz grapes were harvested from February 14th to 21st, between 13.2 and 14.5 baume.

THE WINEMAKING

The hand picked grapes were de-stemmed without crushing and fermented in small open vats for between 14 to 30 days, with hand plunging twice per day. The wine was fermented on skins to dryness before being pressed to barrel. Maturation was in mostly large format French oak vats (50%) and smaller French (40%) and American (10%) oak barrels for 10 months and included a small portion new oak (10%). This combination has allowed the fruit to have full expression with the oak playing a supporting role.

THE WINE

This wine is a vibrant expression of Heathcote Shiraz relying on intense fruit combined with subtle oak. Bright red purple colour. The nose displays aromas of plum and dark berries with hints of cocoa and earthy notes. The palate is bright, lively and fresh with berry fruit intensity, well balanced acidity, fine dusty tannins and persistent length. This Shiraz is made to be approachable in its youth, but will also gain in complexity and finesse over the next 3-5 years.

ANALYSIS – Alcohol: 13.8%, Titratable Acidity: 6.1 g/L, pH: 3.64

Wine Reviews

"Elegant, stylish wine. Deep and concentrated fruit with supportive gravelly tannins with a hint of graphite character. Deep and generous middle palate with an exceptionally long finish. So well balanced with richness and a seamless velvety texture. 95/100. Best drinking: Now to 2026" Ray Jordan The West Australian July 2016
"I believe that Pastiche is a 'second label' or a more immediate drinking wine in the Tellurian portfolio but, by golly, this wine has grown up over the last few years and in 2013 it is a very accurate, savoury Heathcote thoroughbred Shiraz. The attack of fruit on the palate…
"Destemmed, open fermenters 14-30 days, matured for 10 months in large format French vats (50%), smaller French (40%) and American (10%), 10% new. This has the most expressive bouquet of the '13 Tellurian Shirazs, red fruits as well as black on display; there is an almost juicy quality to…
