Block 3 SR Shiraz 2014

Since first vintage in 2008, we have seen remarkable differences across Shiraz Block 3 at Tranter Rd between Short Rows (SR) low on the hill and Top of the Long Rows (TLR) high on the slope. Short Rows is darker with wonderful intensity and power without being heavy. A single Tranter shiraz component showing fascinating influence of "terroir". Cellar 10 - 15 years.

Dark crimson. Nose opens with brooding aromas of blueberry, blood plum, earth and dark cocoa. Intense dark fruit floods a lush palate all held in check by grainy tannins. Finishes with great length, flavour intensity, without heaviness.

Block 3 of our Tellurian vineyard growing in Cambrian soils formed over 500 million years. Deep, rich, decomposed greenstone rock and limestone with soil depths between 1.2 to 2m allow roots to reach deep, while relatively low fertility controls vigor and yield.

2014 season started with good winter rainfall followed by a dryer than average spring. Despite lack of rain, vine growth was good, and thanks to the fine weather, good fruit set. Warm days in January and February accelerated ripening, which started slightly ahead of normal.

Fruit 100% de-stemmed, fermented in 2 year-old 5000L French oak. Grapes fermented on skins for 28 days to dryness with hand plunging or pump overs twice daily. 17 months in large format French oak, 50% new.
