Tellurian Wines

Block 3 SR Shiraz 2017

Since first vintage in 2008, we have seen remarkable differences across Shiraz Block 3 at Tranter Rd between the "Short Rows" (SR) low on the hill and the "Top of the Long Rows" (TLR) high on the slope. The Short Rows exhibit a more delicate expression or shiraz, soft fruits framed by ripe silky tannins. A single Tranter shiraz component showing fascinating influence of "terroir". Drinking excellently now.

VINEYARD

Block 3 of our Tellurian vineyard growing in Cambrian soils formed over 500 million years. Deep, rich, decomposed greenstone rock and limestone with soil depths between 1.2 to 2m allow roots to reach deep, while relatively low fertility controls vigor and yield.

VINTAGE

The 2017 vintage began with drier than normal Spring months but mild consistent temperatures. A timely dose of rain in January helped the vines toward an excellent finish, garnering a nice long ripening period.

WINEMAKING

Fruit 100% de-stemmed, fermented in 2 year-old 5000L French oak. Grapes fermented on skins for 28 days to dryness with hand plunging or pump overs twice daily. 17 months in large format French oak, 50% new.
