Block 3 TLR Shiraz 2014

Since first vintage in 2008, we have seen remarkable differences across Shiraz Block 3 at Tranter Rd between Short Rows (SR) low on the hill and Top of the Long Rows (TLR) high on the slope. TLR is fragrant with lovely instensity and beautiful tannin structure. A single Tranter shiraz component showing fascinating influence of “terroir”. Cellar 10-15 years.

Dark crimson. The nose reveals fresh blackberries and clove spice which combine with earthy, savoury aromatics. Super fine mouth coating tannins wrap around core of blue/black fruit. The flavours on the palate are driven by a vein of minerality that provides exceptional length.

Block 3 of our Tellurian vineyard growing in Cambrian soils formed over 500 million years. Deep, rich, decomposed greenstone rock and limestone with soil depths between 1.2 to 2m allow roots to reach deep, while relatively low fertility controls vigor and yield.

2014 season started with good winter rainfall followed by a dryer than average spring. Despite lack of rain, vine growth was good, and thanks to the fine weather, good fruit set. Warm days in January and February accelerated ripening, which started slightly ahead of normal.

Fruit 100% de-stemmed and fermented in concrete (stainless steel line). The grapes were fermented on skins for 19 days; until dryness with hand plunging or pump overs twice daily. Maturated for 17 months in larger format French oak (50% new).
