Fiano 2019

Grown throughout warmer regions in Southern Italy, Fiano thrives in Heathcote's warm days and cool nights. Crafted in a fresh, lively style, the fine palate weight of Tellurian Fiano is enlivened by chalky texture and appealing varietal complexity.

Pale Straw in colour. Fresh aromas of cut green grass, green apple and citrus. Flavours of green apple, grassy, lemon and lime citrus followed by fresh acidity, light bodied with slightly waxy texture and honey-like characters through the back palate.

The majority of the fruit for 2019 Fiano came from Chalmers vineyard on the eastern side of the Mount Camel range in Colbinabbin, along with a small amount from our Tellurian vineyard where ancient rich, decomposed greenstone rock and limestone and soil depths up to 2m allow roots to reach deep, while relatively low fertility controls vigour and yield.

The warm dry conditions for 2018 continued into the 2019 growing season. Low rainfall over winter, followed with a dry spring, and hot summer. Vintage commenced in the third week of February, consistent with average start dates, and after looking like we would have a quick, condensed harvest, conditions cooled and the vintage extended slightly longer than the average.

Machine harvested at night to take advantage of the cool temperatures. The juice was then pressed to tank to settle for 48 hours then racked and inoculated. Fermented cool to retain aromatics. Kept on light lees for 6 weeks to build texture.
